Today November 10th is launch day of the Vendee Globe. The around the world single person Yacht race staring in France and sailing south and east for the next 2 months. We would be sailors can live the voyage at http://www.virtualregatta.com/ . Still time to get your boat, pick your equipment and head out to sea with 100,000 virtual sailors, like me. No cost involved. I will be updating my experiences in this column as often as I can. If you enter the race let me know here so we can chat from our ships while on the journey. Having done this race once I would be glad to help any newbies understand what I have learned from 4 yrs ago. For those who would also like to follow the Vendee Globe real race here is the link http://www.vendeeglobe.org/en/ The launch is at 12:30pm local French Time today.

A successful launch of the real boats from Les Sables d'Olonne, France was accomplished Saturday about 1pm local time. I am swinging wide around the Iberian Penninsula today and tomorrow to get wide enough of the Canary Islands to pass them on the western side as we head south into the South Atlantic and prepare to head east south of The Cape Of Good Hope. The winds have been favorable with about 25 km to keep me going at a fair clip. It is a long race and a daily even hourly effort to adjust course heading and watch for sail changes.

Allan.....

Most of us don't know what the hell you're talking about.

Did you, for some strange reason, go off in a sailboat to go around the world?

Or is this still a "virtual" sailing trip?

This is all my fault. I promised to rationalise my wife's earlier attempts at a virtual golf tournament, but I simply forgot.

Please tell me Allan, that you are not ACTUALLY somewhere out in the middle of the Indian Ocean!

I KNOW!

I am just sayin' there was already cases when the Australian Navy had to rescue these "adventurers".

I am just looking ahead to see if I have to email my mate to stock up on thermal blankets again.

Okie......there was a certain amount of sarcasm involved and......well, I don't think you got it.

Ok, I'll explain it then...

Once upon a time, us Aussies didn't do much. Then came "round the world" yacht races and then FINALLY, our Royal Navy had something to do. Rescuing round the world yachting failures.

Since this virtual yacht race covered the same territory, I thought I would impose the virtual thought, "Oh please! Not again!"

Did that come off as sarcastic?
