I just read that today, August 13, is LEFT-HANDERS DAY!!! As a dedicated southpaw, I would like to know how many in the Facta world are left-handed. Please sign in with any comments you may have, OK? I think it will be interesting to see......and I am betting that lots of you are!

Interestingly it was mentioned a short time ago how many world champion motorcyclists were left handed. From my experience riding like a looney round the Island I know right hand bends are more difficult for a right handed rider (me). Most tracks are built clockwise ie right handed bends for the most part so a "slight" advantage for you abnormal people who are left handed. It may seem silly even strange but a fact I tell you !!

Our last three Presidents have been lefties. Southpaws.

Prove it, Kevin. I don't believe you.

I'm one as well, for years I had to use righthanded can openers and scissors, but now, left all the way, except I still throw and kick right handed / footed.

Excellent, everyone!! Lefties have been a discriminated-against minority forever...e.g., " sinister" and "gauche" vs. "dexterous" and "adroit." I'm sure there are more of you "wrong arms" out there....who else???? This could be our logo: (:

My sister is left handed - when we lived in Africa we attended a mission school and I have vivid memories of her left hand tied to her chair so she would have to use her right. My dad came back from one of his sea trips early came to the mission and spotted Philippa all trussed up he was furious and I remember him yelling at the nun! We left the community shortly after that and moved to Lagos.

When I was six years old, or thereabouts, I used to write on the left-hand page with my left hand and on the right-hand page with my right. It made perfect sense to me to use the hand that was closest.

I don't recall how I was made to choose although I know that my parents were told "This child is making it hard for himself". I have a feeling it was left to me to decide and so I arbitrarily became left-handed at age 6.

These days I'm a bit of a mixture. I still use my left for writing. I used to hold a fork in my right and the knife in my left but switched because I got bored of having to reverse the place setting. I still use my left when eating with a spoon though and for eating with chopsticks. I used to wear my watch on my right but switched to wearing it on my left because watches are designed to be worn that way (i.e. I got bored of having to take my watch off to wind it).

I play most sports right-handedly except darts where I favour my left.

Anyhow, I'm sure you were all fascinated by that. I'm not sure if that makes me ambidextrous or just awkward.

Great info, people!!! I have always been interested in left-handedness...I am truly left in all things, but obviously many people ARE ambidextrous....my daughter writes, eats, sews, cuts left-handed but in sports -- golf, tennis, etc., she's a righty. She, like you, Dr., wrote with both hands 'til about age six.
It is SO wrong to try to change a child's handedness...good for your father, Sally!!! is your sister happily left-handed now???
From what I've read, only about 10 to 15% of people are lefties. Do you think that fact may make us the chosen ones?? (: Surely we are special?!?!?!

I'm never convinced by stats about the number of people who are left-handed. Figures show that left-handedness is on the increase but I think it's quite likely that we're not seeing an increase in incidence so much as a decrease in intolerance such as shown by Sally's nuns.

I don't think we're the special ones. I think we're just the ones who stubbornly stuck to our left-handed guns in a right-handed world. No wonder they call us gauche, we're just an awkward bunch.

I must admit that when I see a left-handed person, say, stir batter or deal cards, he or she DOES look awkward!! But that is probably because it's a right-handed world.
Actually I really like all the lefties I know....and they are, as a group, somewhat different. My husband once "accused" me of thinking left-handed ....maybe so! (:

I think, truthfully, that one of my dogs is a leftie. I really do and his left paw is considerably larger than his right. Could it be?

My dog only snuggles with me. LOL I could try to persuade him to bat you around with it. Seriously, he is a Sheltie and he always goes outside and circles to the right and I checked my other smaller Sheltie last night and his right paw is larger and he always circles to the left! This is mainly for the purpose of chasing squirrels up the big trees but it is truly herding. The smaller dog will NEVER come back into the house until everyone else is back inside, including humans. Smart little dog, that one. My dogs don't play. It is the oddest thing. They like to run. The like to kill birds which they catch. I know they sound awful but they are just sort of feral. Sometimes I have to throw their dinners onto the grass to get them to eat. (Don't worry...I never use poison on my grass) They are odd. I still adore them. Thanks for making Robert your club mascot! He a very good boy!

I eat, catch and shoot (they made me do a funny eye test before giving me a gun!) with my left hand... in school we had to write with the 'correct' hand but you should see the mess that passes as my handwriting to to this day... and with a left handed mother and son there is fair chance I should be left handed but on a positive note I have no issues cutting my nails on either hand!
