How are you finding random challenges at the moment? Too hard? Too easy? Just right? Are there any subjects you think should be added to randoms? Any you would like to see removed? Post your ideas here. If you are not sure if it is in randoms post it anyway.

Random subjects also appear in the Category challenges eg Language or Music challenges and the Decathlon contains only subjects that are in randoms. Changes to randoms would affect these as well.

Apart from the gods and goddesses, none of the others are in randoms. The flags in randoms are just the National ones, others are not.

How do we know which subjects are already in Randoms? Perhaps a little flag or asterisk in the factopedia would be useful (but obviously this is programming work for someone).

Personally, I would love to see the end of ZX Spectrum games.

There isn't currently a way of knowing what is in randoms unfortunately but take note of any subjects that come up in randoms or the daily brainoff or the Decathlon, they are all random-eligible subjects and all questions within a subject are available.

ZX Spectrum is a random one.

I have been an advocate of more subject matter in randoms for a long time. In my view there are plenty of not-so-obscure topics (sorry kev and your tanks) that could be added.
I am with Nem, however, in regretting not being able to identify them easily.
On the other hand, I have been gaining some ability to compete at the top with the current list and it would suit my personal interest to leave the list as is. Who knows, maybe I'll be able to memorize the lot.
Whatever is decided by consensus is fine with me. I could post a list of topics I think could be included and are not (as far as I can tell) if anyone wants me to and we could see if anyone else agrees.

Folks: I've been compiling my own list of the topics that are "random eligible" and I think that there are a number of excellent topics not included, which if added would spice up these competitions (and make the top 3-6 competitors work a bit harder to keep ahead of the masses. I'm including this list below.

To my knowldedge none of these topics are included as random eligible based on what I've seen over the last 6-7 months. Some of these topics may not be as comprehensive as we'd hope them to be or may need to be edited a bit. I'm also committed (or should be committed) to contributing to several of these over the next year.

Fictional Characters in Literature
Name the Painter - Baroque and 1800-Present

Pulitzer Prize for Non-Fiction and Poetry

I also concur with Nemesis that the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 games should be relegated to the dustbin of history (or bit bucket), given the trivial nature of the subjects. And if we are to remember Cricket Test Grounds, we should have an even-handed approach to remembering MLB stadiums! Also, the great sport of golf is poorly represented!

There is a random sport that comes up all the time. Might be running, might be knitting. Who holds the record for 1000 meters, etc?

I'll take a look at making random-eligible topics easily identifiable. I'm not sure that I like the idea of putting an asterisk by topic names. Admittedly, making things look pretty isn't my forte but I'll see if I can come up with something a little more aesthetically pleasing.

Actually...there's a list of categories in the Factopedia: All Subjects - Highly Rated - Bands/Artists - Countries - People - Quiz Wall. I could certainly add "Random Eligible" to that list.

And in defence of cricket grounds over MLB stadiums, the reason it works out like that is because cricket is an international sport whereas MLB is a national one (I'll gloss over the Blue Jays), specific to the US. To give fair warning - if we added MLB stadiums into randoms then there'd be little argument for not including Premiership Football grounds.

Except that doesn't currently exist. Wow. Amazed nobody has added that yet.

These are country specific and I can't say I'd like to see them in randoms, would be like including New Zealand Rugby grounds (yes I know it doesn't exist - yet). As mentioned, the cricket grounds topic includes many countries which is why it is different.

It isn't that I mind the ZX spectrum games or the Commodore 64 per se. I think I would like them if the pictures were better. Lots of time you can figure out the answer just by looking at the set of possible replies but not with that bunch. I could identify Zombie Apocalypse if only I could see the zombies.....

Some of the other categories mentioned are just way to trivial. Add them if you like but you are taking a chance on driving traffic away from the site and the Count may not like that.

There is a fine line when you play trivia. You don't want something so obscure that you don't stand a snowballs chance in hell answering it and you don't want it so easy that you don't break a sweat. If you are putting U.S. Presidents in randoms, than World Leaders and U.K pm's are fair game too. Put all the flags you like in, I like em but I realize that not everybody is going to feel that way. Cricket is a British Empire thing but since this site is Anglo centric anyway I don't mind. There is enough U.S. centric questions to balance it out.

Finally, for the more obscure bits of trivia in there, we have the special tourneys and the Java Jive.

What I want in a question is just a fighting chance to answer it, that's all. I dislike those questions that don't, as it is just a wonderful guess, which can be thrilling but doesn't reflect on any skill or effort, although I am not one to dismiss the joy of random luck guessing. :-)

Egyptian Pharaohs...really?? I thought the Popes were bad enough....

At least Seve didn't ask to bring in the Dewey decimal system....gah!!! :-)

If I interpret: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sports_attendance_figures#Top_10_Leagues_in_total_attendance anywhere close to correctly, MLB attendance in the U.S.and Canada last year was 73.5M, while cricket paid attendance (worldwide) was less than 1.0M. Not counting television rights and worldwide broadcasting, it is still likely that MLB outweighs Cricket interest worldwide by a huge margin. Besides, there are more than 45% of Factacular's most consistent participants reside in North America.

Shortie's original obs and Sag's endorsement was that RE's should be expanded. I agree obviously. How about recognizing baseball, tennis and golf a bit more? Along with Cricket and Rugby, the only thing that we'd be lacking would be dressage!

Major League Baseball.

MLB enjoys a sinking popularity in the U.S.

Baseball once considered the national pastime has been surpassed by the National Football League.

I'm more than happy to recognise tennis and golf more, certainly. Both are international sports. If there are any tennis and golf topics that you think should be included then I'm all ears. If not, then by all means contribute.

As a rule, though, we tend to exclude years-based topics ("Who won the French Open in 1999?" etc) from randoms.

As for MLB, apart from Wrigley Field (with its appearance in the Blues Brothers) or Yankees Stadium (which is obviously a giveaway), I think I'd struggle to name a single MLB stadium. I'm not saying that I'm the benchmark by any means, and I'm more than willing to hear people who disagree, but I just don't think that MLB has an international appeal - as a trivia topic anyhow. If any non-American players want to chip in in support of it then that's a different matter.

The counter-argument would be to remove cricket grounds as being too Commonwealth-centric. I'd probably be more inclined to listen to that argument to be honest.

There certainly are some in Seve's list that look like good candidates, will need to look at each and see if there is any other reason not to include them.

Movie Taglines is a good candidate in theory. The problem with that one is that the vast majority of facts in the topic are completely obscure.

If it were composed more predominantly of things like "In Space nobody can hear you scream", "Protecting the Earth from the scum of the Universe" or "Who you gonna call?" then it would certainly be there. At some point it should probably be split into two topics or something - but that's a lot of work.

I'm not trying to knock individual topics from Seve's list - just explaining the reasoning behind not including that particular one.

How about culling some of the popular music topics which overlap? There are many in that category. AND there there are really far too many obscuregods and goddesses in there. They are truly ridiculous. It was a better game when the topics were more limited, precise and pertinent.

There are 12 gods and goddesses topic, 8 of which are included in randoms:

African - Not included
Aztec - Included
Celtic - Not included
Egyptian - Included
Greek - Included
Hawaiian - Not included
Hindu - Included
Japanese - Included
Mayan - Not included
Norse - Included
Other - Included
Roman - Included

I think we could and probably should change the state of affairs for Aztec, Mayan and Other gods and goddesses. The others, I think, are about right.

I like Xolotl! That's one I know! lol

The cricket and rugby items are really hard for the US players. Most of the have Anglo names and they could live in either England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, NZ or Australia or South Africa. It is sheer insanity for me, as an American. I know the MLB teams, and I know the MLF teams but I don't know too many individual players these days. MLF has each team playing only 8 games! But, they are wildly popular...not with me....but with other people. I don't ever watch football and would never attend a game. (I am referring to American football.)

I vote to get rid of the Japanese gods. I have no opinion about MLB or MLF. It makes no difference to me.

Seve's list is really good. I say aye.
