What's wrong with being south of the wall?

Anyways, a few deaths this week.....

Have we recorded the sad passing of Sendak, Summers & Fischer-Dieskau? If not I will include them, and also - did anyone else know that Pythagoras died because he invented a religion that had a strict tenet against touching beans, so when he was being pursued by assassins and his path was blocked by a field of beans he had to stop and they caught him? Gotta love Horrible Histories for that one.

That's interesting about Pythagoras. Maybe I could do a topic on bizarre and odd deaths. Theat would be good. Now y'all behave now.

No reason for anyone to NOT send challenges. AND ho w about getting rid of some of the ridiculous popular music questions. There are too many!

Stupid Deaths... do we think Horrible Histories have that title copywrited?

I have just started new job but in between trying to absorb info will look into those who have died so far this year and start the subject off. Suddenly I am full of vim and vigor having found someone wants me

Speaking of facts, is there any danger of "facting-down" by adding more increasingly meaningless facts just for the sake of cliicking on new stuff?
Topics like Shakespeare lines and atomic numbers are taken already. Personally, I am more interested in mastering the above two topics and a few more than I am in merely adding to my total...to become the first Factacular player with a million facts.
I dunno.

If editors suggest TOPICS for inclusion either as a NEWBIE or ADD ON then assign willing contributers I believe that this will INCREASE QUALITY and OBVIOUSLY QUANTITY.

As for Hadrians Wall we built the dammed thing on English soil to avoid paying LAND Taxes - so there.

True are false is always fun.....could be in a category such as Science True or False, etc. Hmmmm. I might try to do one!

SBFM27 has a point.

It's all well and good for members to sit and grumble over the obtuse nature of subjects added.

But it takes an editor to add them. Once beyond that point, it's no longer a member's problem. Or am I getting this wrong? Nahh....I ain't.

Might we suggest, SBFM27 and myself, that whilst involved in your editor's forums, you do less power play, and more editing.......either before or afterwards.....whenever.....just do something. Might I suggest that an argument about font size is NOT constructive.

( I just made that up but it is sort of akin to old discussions)

How about more "vetting"? It couldn't hoit, could it?

I stand ready to be banned. It will be an honour.

If not, I have this subject called "Exoplanets" that I have been toying with.

:-)

Might I suggest that I find your post is insulting. I can assure you I do not indulge in "Power Plays", and I do a lot of editing. Maybe I should do none and see if you notice the difference.

I sorta think that is SBFM's point.

Gosh! You are really making this easy.

Umm, how insulted you are is immaterial. That is your problem, not ours.

WE are the members. We have to deal with this stuff that YOU guys let in.

The EFFORT again, that you guys apply to do it is also immaterial. You volunteered. That is it.

But some actual "editorial" approach would be good instead of adding everything you see. I am sure you don't do that, but still. Sometimes contributors get a short side for contributing and that just isn't fair.

Why don't you tell us what you would LIKE to see? How to block up this category or that? It couldn't hurt, could it?

As users of the site can we not agree a strategy to ADD FACTS so that the site can survive instead of bitching and arguing about. My initial posting was nothing more than a gee up to all whho use the site that they should contribute NOTHING MORE.

If a user of the site has gone to the trouble of suggesting a subject for inclusion and the subject is laid out in the accepted format then I can see no reason as to why it should not be included.

I will add that I am not a computer geek and often do not have a geeks insight into computer format but IF someone takes their time explains the complexities and shows me the way then I too can as I am sure many others in my position could ADD THE FACTS that will help the site survive.

At the moment I and the many others who enjoy the site are wondering if there will be any other additions to the site.

I still prefer what I regard as quality facts. I know that is subjective and that is why I think over the course of Facta's existence, whomever has been doing the inclusion thing, there has always been a liberal attitude toward inclusion.

To my friend shortie, I say that I think I know where you're coming from: you just like clicking on facts and watching your total grow. Wouldn't it be better for you to reset your facts and start over again? You could be the first player to hit 150,000 for the third time! And in the process you would be further cementing into your memory bank those facts that you truly want to remember.

I am all for new facts, good ones if possible. Shortie is right that the continued additions are necessary for the site to continue to grow. But my original question is still: can we dumb-down the site and thereby doom it by adding stuff with little consideration to quality. I still dunno the answer.

I am now privy to information that I was not privy to before.

Probably because I had to be offline for a period of time. But now I know it, it changes my above to a fair degree.

But I still agree with SBFM.

Deciding what to add and what not to add is a tricky and, as already mentioned, subjective thing. We do tend to err on the liberal side, one man's meat and all that. But there are subjects that get rejected for a variety of reasons, the main one being playability.

The system we have where some subjects are in randoms means that many of the more obscure subjects do not need to be played unless you have an interest in them, they can just happily sit there for those who like to play them. Of course that is also subjective but we do our best.

I do support SBFM's original call for more contributions though, new facts do keep the place interesting.

Whilst people can make statements like "WE are the members" the truth is that the members of the site don't speak with one voice. As JMK says, we have tended to be pretty liberal in terms of what we accept.

People who have put a good deal of effort into a subject get their noses put out of joint (understandably) when their work is turned away. Similarly, we've had people complain when facts (or subjects) which were previously accepted get deleted. People who keep an eye on their fact count start demanding to know where their facts have gone.

As always, the old maxim holds true that you can please some of the people all the time and all of the people some of the time...

There has never been a well-defined editorial line on the site. Editors have always used their own judgment and some are more stringent than others. There's a fine line that we need to tread and if anyone has any constructive suggestions about where that line should be then I, for one, am all ears.
