A little spat going on about rules so I thought I'd look them up. At bottom of Home page is a link to Terms which are the house rules. Guidelines really I would say. Nothing too difficult but I found a couple that may be pertinent.

6.2.2 post, publish, distribute or disseminate material or information that is defamatory, infringing, obscene, indecent, threatening, abusive, harassing or unlawful. ( Well I've broken that one a few times meself )

6.2.3 post, publish, distribute or disseminate material or information that incites discrimination, hate or violence towards any person or group on account of their race, religion, disability, nationality or otherwise. ( Again probably guilty as charged )

6.2.4 threaten, abuse, disrupt, stalk or otherwise violate the legal rights (including rights of privacy and publicity) of others. ( Yep one of me favourites )

6.2.9 impersonate any person or entity for the purpose of misleading others. ( Not done it meself but I know someone who has )

So we have these rules/terms which I freely admit I've probably broken at some time except that I've usually done it with a smile on my face. ( I did have , honestly).

Rather than have the odd person pop up and be offended, on behalf of others sometimes, should we consider setting up a sub-committee of a 100 or so members to police these rules/terms ?
Perhaps it may be better for the offended person to pm the culprit and ask them to desist ?
Personally I think it better to allow good sense and a sense of humour to prevail. Most of us are old enough to know better but occasionally the habits of years gone by get the better of us. I suggest a simple tut tut will suffice rather than have arguements break out.

I do find it strange that Australians, Americans etc try to argue over taste, don't they know they have none ????

100 or so members? That's basically just about everyone who comes to the site regularly isn't it?

I think that it depends on if you actually offend anyone with your behaviour etc... most people are fairly relaxed about banter, it's just you also have to be careful in case a newbie joins and doesn't understand that kev is trying to be a dirty old man and that a lot of the ladies are dipsomaniacs gasping for the sun to go over the yard arm so we can have a pint of gin.

Anyway, committees worry me, they never seem to get much done and they cut into serious drinking time with all the talking about doing nothing that goes on (or rather this is my experience of being on the school PTA committee).

Well there is already a group who police the rules/terms. They are the editors. No reason why other members can't mention it if they are offended by something that is said though, so long as they do it in a way that doesn't contravene the rules.

And I totally dispute the remark about the ladies on the site rmcmanus - everyone knows I prefer merlot to gin. :-)

"already a group who police the rules/terms." Not entirely sure who they are. scmwns ?? never see him, Stu ?? usually picking fight with wabzy, scratch ?? gone but not forgotten. Jav and Jan always there when we need them. Is that really policing ?? Need a gamekeeper to catch a poacher ??

Scmwns, Scratch and Stu are there when needed and it is not exactly a huge job. And there are plenty of members who will report breaches to an editor if they see them. If you have problems with the way the rules are policed on site PM me to discuss it.

Out of curiosity - where is this spat that you mentioned that has prompted a need for change?

For the record - I'd generally agree that a "tut tut" suffices. Feel free to tut away. If you want to form a sub-committee of deputy tutters then there's nothing really to stop you.

actually I wasn't that bothered which was the point of the whole post. It seems to have veered into the personal which I was against from the start. easy how these tings get misconstrued online when you can't see peoples faces. which as near as an apology you'll get from me !!
Carry on chaps

Best make that 99. Can't seem to find scmwns.
Anyway, I noticed the discourse leading to your post and briefly considered politely counseling the both of you if it continued but it didn't. Thought things would die down but then you posted this which will also die down in the glare of yet another dog and pony act.

rules? There are rules? Hmm better go read the fine print I said I agreed to when joining.

If someone says something that offends me - I ignore it - takes a lot to offend me and I can't say I have been offended ever here.

Mind you - understanding what people are talking about is another thing - if I don't understand I just tiptoe quietly away :)
