Been threateningto do it for a long time but at last started to write a book about one of the most famous engagements of the war. I'll try not to laugh as Stalin makes mistake after mistake or even guffaw as Hitler does the same. Pair of idiots in charge of most powerful armies in the world at the time.

Probably done with a straight face but I suppose I have to laugh at some bits.

Anyway , I may post excerpts now and again .

You have been warned !!

Here's a tragically short list of stuff I think I remember about the German invasion of USSR in WW2.  I look forward to Kev correcting me.

1.  Didn't Stalin have a hard time accepting that an invasion was taking place at all?

2.  The invasion was framed as much as a race war by the Germans as a war for dominance and territory

3.  Uncle Joe had done a good job of denuding his army of competent generals in the great purges of the 30's

4.  The sheer scale of everything that happened- the casualties, the atrocities, the incompetence- takes the breath away

5.  Er...

6.  That's it

Right ,

Sally , yes it was an excellent film but not what this is about !!

Helen , yes , there were a few murderous bloodthirsty pirates by that name

Bryn , yup , yup , yup , yup , that is what makes it so much fun. I think I can expand your 4 points to about 4-500 pages. Maybe more.

Seriously, I would love to read this book Kev.  Any worthwhile knowledge I have concerning military history pretty much ends with the third Punic war.  I can think of no one better placed to unpick the sheer scale and insanity of Barbarossa.  I'll gladly accept an invite to the launch party...
