Welcome to the Solheim Cup. We are at the Golf Club St. Leon-Rot in Germany for the inaugural edition of the event.

Good luck to both teams and have fun! I hear there is plenty of beer to be had in Germany this time of year...

Please decide your team names amongst yourselves!

Solheim Cup

Two teams will be competing in multiple different formats. Each brainoff will count as 1 point in the Cup table, with ties resulting in ½ point for each team. The team with the highest point total at the end of the tournament will win the Cup.

For this tournament, the time limit will be 48 hours. There will be no need to finish in time to create the next days groups.

I will attempt to enlist one player from each team to be a “playing captain”, who just like in the real Ryder/Solheim cup, will set their team’s lineup for the day.

Formats:

Best Ball - Only the best score (highest brainoff/lowest golf) will count for each team.

Scramble - . Worst score for each team will be dropped, team with lowest average golf score wins.

Match Play - Head to head. The best golf score wins.

Four Ball - Teams of 2. Best golf score wins the hole.

Middle Ball - Only the middle score will count for each team.

Foursome - Two man teams. Best cumulative golf score wins.

Best Worst Ball - Opposite of best ball!

All Formats will use the golf scoring system:

Condor: 2500 (-4)

Albatross: 2250-2499 (-3)

Eagle: 2000-2249 (-2)

Birdie: 1500-1999 (-1)

Par: 1000-1499 (+0)

Bogey: 500-999 (+1)

Double Bogey: 250-499 (+2)

Triple Bogey: 1-249 (+3)

Quadruple Bogey: 0 (+4)

Penalty: Not Playing within 48 hours (+5)

Time to pick team names! Also, would love a volunteer captain from each team to help me choose lineups each day. I will PM you the details and it will be super easy. I can set the lineups myself if nobody volunteers :) .

Not sure what's going on re team captains but thought choosing one of the high tourney scorers might be an equitable option (which puts me out of the running).
Maybe Seve or Ruby would be interested in the job?

I have updated the schedule for Monday.  Most of you have played my tournaments so know the brainoffs will all be sent as vanilla brainoffs from me.  I understand it can be confusing, especially with different game types. There will be a table with links in this thread (post #4), the links will be clickable for each "hole", feel free to use these.

48 hour limit for each brainoff this time; groups will not be dependant on previous days' play.

Monday Game types:

Foursomes - Two person teams. The team's two golf scores (see table) will be cumulated. The team with the lower cumulated golf score will win the hole. Ties will be halved.

Scrambles - 3-4 person teams.  The worst golf score (not facta scoring!!!) will be dropped. Remaining scored will be averaged. Lower average team golf score will win the hole. Ties halved.

Match Play - Monday play will end with head to head match play. 1-v-1 with the better golf score winning the hole. Ties halved.

If there is anything confusing please either ask questions or just enjoy the brainoffs and I will take care of keeping the scores! As usual there will be mini-tables keeping score in each brainoff/hole, and the tournament table will be updated as often as possible.

Good luck to both the Winners and the Geezers!

We're underway! The Winners and Geezers both looked tough on the range, I'm happy to be on this side of the carnage. One Winner applied to help as a captain, if one Geezer volunteers I'm glad to PM you both details.  Otherwise I will keep making the groups.  Good luck to everybody today! Join me in the clubhouse when you're done, I'll be within reach of all day.

Chooky with an albatross for the Geezers. And we have our first points awarded of the tournament: JMK (Winners) and Lindy (Geezers) matched each other stroke for stroke and ended in a dead heat. 1/2 point to each team to start the scoring.

After another tie for Sally and Phil, Winners take the lead with a beaut of a condor from Shortbreadforme27. Looks like Vepa's rally call did the trick!

Winners are absolutely crushing it at the moment, have done no worse than tie all morning. Evening players for Geezers have some work to do!

Tallyho has the hot putter at the moment.

Helen McKenzie is undefeated so far in all formats, can anybody beat her?

Can Geezers close the gap?

Good luck today to both teams.

Is anybody not confused?

A few reminder points:

  • This is a trial tournament. If it doesn't work out, it probably won't be repeated/will be changed.
  • There are different game types in this tournament. I can not send fancy brainoffs. There is a table on which you can click all your matches and find out what game type you are playing before you click the brainoffs.
  • There is no format where doing poorly on a brainoff is the goal, so it is entirely possible to just play the quizzes and not worry about the score tallying (my job anyway).
  • Thank you all for being trial mice, I understand it is a convoluted format. Figuring out what kinds of games works is part of the process here.
  • Just have fun and try to beat the other team.

Finally the first condor (perfect score) under this format. Who got it? You guessed it - Nemesis.

Though it wasn't enough to beat a spirited team of Bertie and Jackson, who tied Nemesis/Helen in their Foursome match with a pair of eagles.

Team Geezers are starting to claw some points back, did they leave it too late?

Are the winners too confused to hold their lead?

Stay tuned.

Lindy has pulled a couple of points back for Geezers, but a few of the Winners' foursome pairs have won all of their matches so far (vepa/tally, quiz/map, and rmcmanus/sally). If Ruby can pull in a few more wins for the Geezers they could pull of the big comeback tomorrow.

The confusion is about to end! Thursday (final day) schedule will be finalized soon. There will be two match play (singles) matches for everybody, so plenty of room for Geezers to make up ground. Or for Winners to really bury their competition.

Thanks again to everyone for taking part!

We are underway for the final day.

I thank everyone for playing! It helps a lot to have plenty of volunteers to test things on.

Think I will shelve this particular idea until it can be operated less confusingly.

The Pro-Am idea (Chooky/Tally) is much simpler without a program to set up the different game times. Expect to see that in the coming months.

Am also still interested in getting some sort of league going, will probably post something to suggestions in a bit here.

Thanks again to all and JMK for facilitating :)

Thanks for the tourney. I liked playing this. Perhaps a different game type each day rather than mixed, so Foursomes on one day, scramble on another etc.
But if the object each time is to get a high score in the challenge then it doesn't matter too much.

I thought the same JMK, maybe during Ryder cup next year we can try again :). In the meantime plenty of other things to try.

Thanks again everyone for playing! Will gather the final scores together now... I don't think the Geezers pulled off the comeback this time.

And the aptly-named winners are: WINNERS.

Winners started off with an amazing lead on the first day, and never really let Geezers claw back many points.

  • Foursomes - Winners crushed this format, barely losing any holes.  Vepa/Tallyho and Rmcmanus/Sally both went undefeated in this format. Allan/Bob47 were the best Geezers in this format.
  • Scrambles - Winners had a smaller edge here, thanks largely to Seve/Lindy/Jackson pulling a couple wins out for Geezers.
  • Match play - Slight edge again to winners; Tally, Shorty, and Nem won their matchups while Bob47 won his for Geezers.

Day 2 was close, but Winners still edged it.

  • Fourball - Tallyho/Nem and Helen/Quiz were both undefeated in this format. Ruby/Phil and Bob/Bertie were dominant for Geezers.
  • Best worst ball - Slight edge to winners here.
  • Match play - Winners again! Wins for JMK, Shorty, Tally and Nem. Ruby for the Geezers.

Day 3

  • Best ball - Slight edge winners.
  • Match Play - Here is where the Geezers finally started pulling back points. Wins for Allan, Lindy, Seve, Jackson, and Ruby meant Winners would have to earn it on the final day.

Day 4

  • Geezers won the majority of the final day matchups, but Winners were way too far ahead.

The Winners definitely had some amazing performances. Many of their players had average scores much higher than their statistical averages. Kudos to them and well done!

Kudos to Geezers for fighting back against an inspired team, and pulling some points back in the end.

Now it is time to enjoy the Ryder Cup and get ready for the Kevvie :)
