Welcome to the first edition of Factacular Golf. In the interest of starting at the beginning, we are at The Cathedral of Golf, the Old Course at St. Andrews. Tee times (GMT-ish) for the first two rounds have been finalised.

The time for digging up your clubs and hitting the range is rapidly closing, as in about 12 hours the first group will be approaching the first tee.

The bar will be open as play commences so don't forget to come to the clubhouse after your round to celebrate or commiserate.

Remember all brainoffs from me this week are for the Facta Golf tournament and have a 24 hour limit to play (even though they will still show as playable for 48 hours).

Hole numbers next to each group should be clickable links as corresponding brainoffs go live.

Ties (for group-making purposes) will be decided by the first to "post" and enter the clubhouse (i.e.  the first to finish play for the day).

Ties (for first after completion of regulation play) will be decided by sudden death playoff holes until a winner is decided.

I'm right there with you Helen. Day one groups are out on the course. I'm sitting back with a Corona just watching the early action. Gonna pop in with sally soon and have her open a bottle of Penfolds. Sure it won't be the last today!

Have fun everybody and be wary for swerving beer carts.

Meanwhile I've been pouring myself scotch when nobody is looking.

Once JMK found the beer cart she found the fairway as well.

Even Tiger Woods in his prime was happy to escape some holes with nothing worse than bogey.

Wine - I need wine - NOW!  Let’s crack open the grange.

For those that don’t know Penfolds Grange is an iconic, and horrendously expensive bottle of wine.  Predominantly made with Shiraz grapes - with a very small percentage of Cabernet Savignon grapes blended in. A bottle recently sold for AU$50,000. Hubby and I shared a bottle of 1977 vintage for our 40th anniversary - and we have another bottle of 2002 stashed away to drink when we both retire next year.

Ruby, Java, and BBI seem to have gotten lost and are on the clock.

Round 2 needs to be completed by the time Wednesday's daily brainoffs are going out.  Wednesday's golf groups will be decided by the leaderboard, so I will have no choice but to assess penalties if anyone is late.

I expect we will see some nice scoring today! Good luck everybody!

Today’s wine is from New Zealand and is my favourite NZ winery - this has nothing to do with the fact we’re on their Christmas card list and good friends with much of the staff and the wine maker!  They make very good Pinots and are located just outside Queenstown on the South Island in Bannockburn under the shadow of Mt Difficulty.  Stunning scenery. Nothing better than sipping red wine in front of a roaring fire looking at snow covered mountains.  But for now I have to make do with the club house and memories. Will have a relaxing sip and enjoy the silence before the drunken Riff Raff aka fellow facta mates arrive.

@Ruby. The limit is 24 hours, you made everything in time. I gave leeway for day 1 (can't do so for day 2-3). Unfortunately I can do nothing to change the brainoff from 48-24 hours. As with the Facta Cup, the Facta Golf brainoffs need to expire within 24 hours so that the tournament can progress. I know it can be a bit confusing, as the brainoffs I send all look the same.

I guess the easiest thing is to play them as early as possible.

The round 2 brainoffs will expire in just under 12 hours (8 am in London?/When Wednesday's dailies are sent off). On the clock are Java, Shortbreadforme27, and Bright But Idle.

Pol Roger Vintage Brut is my splurge Champagne - I say this like I drink it all the time. With the cheaper end of the brand selling for  $68 it is a sometimes treat. I can only dream about their high end brew.  It was Winston Churchill’s favourite tipple and more recently Prince Harry and his beautiful bride Meghan served it at their wedding. So today at the midway point I thought you all might like a refined tipple before you hit the beer and liquor

May I say an almighty thank you and well done to BB and all the others who did such a great job hosting the tournament.  It ran like clockwork and was super fun.   I would love to do this again!

Now I need a bottle of Redbreast 15 year old and a quiet corner to mooch in.  Very best of luck everyone yet to complete.

Aaaaaah - Margaret River - for me it is the BEST wine region in Australia and their Chardonnays are the benchmark that other wineries set their wine against!  Of the wineries in the region Leeuwin Estate is the tippy top one. Their art series is their most luscious and opulent one.  A bottle of this must not be shared - it is my precious!  So you can all count yourselves as very VERY special people as I am sharing this with you.  Don’t quaff - savour!

So far, Quiz3000 is in the clubhouse with the lead.

My hunch is that the group to watch today is the ladies in the penultimate group, if one of them can go low early, they may put pressure on Nemesis. Will he keep his lead and take home the Claret Jug? Will he pull a Norman? Is there a Faldo in the chase pack? Stay tuned.

Nemesis certainly did not pull a Norman. In fact, quite the opposite: he was -10 on day 4.  Yes, that is an average of an eagle per hole. Amazing finish!

Quiz and Ruby are tied for second in the clubhouse, just edging out Bertie

I won't quite congratulate anybody yet, as players are still on the course and scorecards still need to be signed.

Come back around teeoff time Friday, there are plenty of awards to award and our final booze selections are waiting to be drunk.

I will go ahead and reveal now, JMK has approved a Team Golf Event which will run the last week of this month, more details to come next week (signup thread will be posted in a few days). We (is that Java I see lurking amongst the more obscure Facta topics?) are also working on a special tournament to come in the near future... Mum's the word on that one, but now might be a good time to explore the Factopedia's depths...

LOL Helen. The cart is yours but I do still need your services for tomorrow! No golf left to be played but there is still booze left to peddle.

Go early?  You mean you can plan?  Well who would have known - I just play using a panicking finger wildly pressing buttons as the time ticks down!!!

Other awards:

Eagle Queen - Bertie. 3 eagles in a row around the turn turned Bertie's round around, she ended up in 4th place.

Mr. Consistency - Seve. An amazing 8 birdies in a row.

Comeback King - Philgreek. 6 strokes better on the back 9 than the front.

Condor Club - Nemesis, Quiz3000, Java. Albatross evaded everyone this time, think Java was the closest.

Spirit - Helen McKenzie & Sally906. For providing the spirit and spirits. Thanks!

Vardon Trophy. Lowest scoring average at end of year (male) current leaders: Nem, Quiz, Vepa, Grip,Bob47 & Jackson.

Vare Trophy. Lowest scoring average at end of year (female) current leaders:  Ruby, Bertie, Chooky, JMK & Lindy.

THANK YOU to JMK for facilitating everything. We would be factless without you!

THANK YOU to EVERYONE for making it fun!

@tally I could do a handicap tourney maybe after a few of these, that way I would have averages to base handicaps off of.  It is certainly a good idea, but might be a bit hard to implement in actual practice.

Same goes for a couple other ideas I have had along those lines. PM me if you have a good idea on how to fairly handicap one of these :).

What?  'On your way out'?  I was planning on mooching by the fire til the next one.  Please don't make me go outside.  My caddie is waiting for me in the car park with a niblick and he looks very unhappy!

I'll look after the Macallan, trust me...

Not a big fan of semillon but luckily I still have a bottle of yesterday's chardonnay so I'll settle down with a glass or three of that.

The thing about a claret jug is that it’s a jug full of claret!  Please help yourselves and let’s raise a glass to Bandi for masterminding this tournament.  Cheers!

Thanks Captain, Quiz, and the rest of you for a good walk ruined.

BB, many, many thanks for a great quizzing twist.

For the last couple of days I've been looking for my copy of  'England, Their England', known for the hilarious cricket match, but also pretty funny about non-Scots playing golf.

Thanks for the fun, BB!   I finished the 18th hole and to have a Condor celebration with some Merlot.  Congrats to Nemesis!  Back to hugging a pot of coffee for me.

Emerging from the fog of a migraine  I must pick up JMK on her dislike of Semillon - well normal Semillon I agree I s quite revolting I feel -but this is not an ordinary Semilon this is Noble One Semilon a beautiful dessert wine. Thick and unctuous - sweet and delicious - it is a grape that has been infected by the fungus botrytis. Is one of the most awarded wines. Smells like marmalade and toffee -tastes pretty much like that as well. Perfect with blue cheese and lemon meringue pie.
