Motorcyclists , are they riders who also drive cars or car drivers who ride ?

Them and cyclists - menaces - but at least motor cyclists pay for licenses to ride and annoy motorists whereas cyclists do it for nothing.

Both. I've always felt that riders fit into one of two categories. The first, which I privately refer to as "true riders" (and I consider myself to belong to), are hooked from the very first ride and at some point will want to try multiple styles. A car is a necessary evil for when the weather is really crappy or you've got a lot of shopping (or more than one tiddly friend) to get home.
If, like me, you've had to give it up, you never, ever, lose the urge.
The second category, the "weekenders" and "enthusiasts" (insert contempt here) will buy some big, fancy-pants thing that they only take out if it isn't going to rain. They buy a  lot of accessories. They join a riders group then drive to their get-togethers.
When my husband is out with his cronies his big fat ugly money pit spends more time parked in front of coffee shops than on the road.

In short, a rider who drives will jump at the chance wherereas a driver who rides will do so only if they're in the mood.

Are there any riders who only ride? I feel there must be.
As for those who do both I feel chooky has touched on the heart of the matter - what is their first love? Do they drive from neccessity or because they prefer it? Do they ride because they love it or because they want to show off, can't afford a car or some other similar motive?

ah , chooky , maybe you ain't so bad after all !! thought I would try and smoke the motorcyclists out , well done that girl .

rode bikes exclusively unti I got married and kid came along , when money allowed I had a bike as well as car but nothing serious until I moved back to Isle of Man . Then I got "involved" with Fireblades  hehehe

Never joined a pack though , they were usually too slow

I have to own up and say I think I'd be too slow for you too. Size - mine - always kept me under 500cc and a Fireblade was the sort of bike I could only dream about. My husband test rode a CBR900 when they first hit the market (in Aus the Fireblade series is known as CBR) and despite being really impressed went and bought himself a K100. I was mostly a Suzuki girl and a GSX fan although I started out on my Mum's hand-me-down CB 200.
If I got the chance now I'd go get myself a Yamaha V Star. It's only an entry level bike and incredibly tame compared to what you were used to but for a not very tall, not very young, not very slim, not very athletic person it fits the bill perfectly.

I definitely fall into the car drivers who ride category and don't really even qualify for that. In my younger days I rode bikes occassionally but never owned one and mostly rode on the back of one. Had a couple of boyfriends with bikes and they did sometimes let me ride theirs. I did enjoy riding I must say.

That would make you a casual rider which is perfectly fine IMHO. As opposed to a weekender, who's just a poser.
Always a bonus when your boyfriend had really good taste in bikes and was willing to share, as I recall.

Just out of interest Kev, what do you call someone who can't even ride a bicycle like me?  My first love is sitting down and doing nothing.

As long as you're smiling, kev, you can call me what you like.  Just don't call me early for breakfast

Never trust a smiling Kev - that smile hides so much - you should be worried when you see his smile. As long as you’re being insulted you can relax.
