No misses or penalties as yet.....ALL hits.....impressive!

Of course, that was just Day One.

Player thaibob was private messaged by me as to the implications and conditions of not nominating prior to the expiry of the Red Ball Challenge.

Well in advance of the expiry of the Day 1 Red Ball Challenge.

Yes, FactaCupAdmin, you have done your job.

Many players did not get this competition originally.

But don't count out thaibob just yet.

Now I've actually played the game for myself, I note the three states of emotion a player might be feeling after they complete a coloured ball challenge.

The HIT - the pressure is off and a sense of jubilation sets in. Take it away Homer J.

The MISS - you are doing great until you realise you have just overshot the target. Maybe the final sequence of "Bully For Bugs" (1953) best illustrates this.

The PENALTY - you start out, bungle a couple of questions, think nothing of it, then realise to your utter horror that you're not going to make it. Again, I ask Homer J. to illustrate this with crystal clarity.

Then there is the 4th - THE SURE THING - where you snicker to yourself "I have a cunning plan, I am SO going to nail this!"

Shortly followed by the words Ooops! and Damn!

There's another one, when you've forgotten the rules and haven't been paying much attention and got misses and penalties confused, think 'well, that's not too bad' then look the next day and frighten your life partner with some swearing.

You realise I have the option of posting every single day's transactions, right?

So when I am accused of "forgetting the rules", I can post the entire competition from Day 1, right?

Like I didn't do the last tournament.

Who comes up with these obviously definable points?

When I said 'you've forgotten the rules' I should have either used the royal 'one has forgotten rules'  or ' I've..etc', meaning me. I'm the one who isn't paying attention and swearing etc. Life has been a muddle in the last few days, so no wonder my grammar could be in a muddle. Apologies - its about me and nobody else.

Relative to the above Ruby Franks, I find myself also adversely reacting at the worst times in the worst way.

Like Andy and Maggie in the BBC's "Extras" (2005 - 2007), some of us find a way to balls it up even if it was not the intention.

Everybody on this site knows that.....especially the Boss who has weighed my sorry ass up for suspension many a time.

I say no harm and no foul. Plus ya got me to finish up and post ALL of the reconciliation tables.

All in all, I'd say that is a service and not a problem.

Just a point of clarification Tinman: if a Player nominates then decides not to play for some reason (e.g. Vepa on day 3) does that count as a penalty, or is it simply null points?

PS - Now Nemesis has said that, I feel shamed into deciding to play as well!  I was having dishonourable thoughts of not playing and waiting to see what happens.  Shame on me!!

I do hope this point can be clarified before next time though, as I believe that I am right in saying that players have nominated colours and then not played them in the early parts of the game and received null points for doing so.

If, after a nomination, the game is not played, then the penalty clause takes force.

Not playing a game is the same as incurring a penalty as zero is the score.

If you both refuse to play, then penalty conditions will be in force.

vepa1943, on Day 3 nominated the "Blue" and "Sports & Leisure" category. The difference being, it was not PLAYED.

As a result, that brainoff was treated as a zero score which meant it was UNDER the required score.

If both of you do not play, then your subsequent zeros will be regarded as penalties.

To put it into perspective.....

"Just a point of clarification Tinman: if a Player nominates then decides not to play for some reason (e.g. Vepa on day 3) does that count as a penalty, or is it simply null points?"

As with what I did on Day Three, vepa1943 was penalised.

If you wish to argue as to why, that is a different subject. Rules are rules.

Either take it up the butt or play your game.

I lost and took it up the butt.

Not saying that's the best option, but it is an option.

We still doing this bertie and Nemesis?

What does that mean?  I hope that I always behave with honour, and I hope that I am stalwart enough not to "desert" anyone.

Not sure how I could have deserted Nemesis anyway, and I wish him well and congratulate everyone who had the bottle to go for a black (whether they got it or not).

It is a pity that we couldn't play over six days which would ensure that we all played for all of the colours (an observation and not a criticism!)

In snooker, if a player is ahead and winning, they can stop there and then or continue with the break.  No penalty is incurred.  If they pull out in mid-break then they not only score zero but can't attempt any further balls.  I just wanted to check what the situation was here.  No sweat.

Only change that I can think of would be to make it a six day tournament so that everyone has to go for a black at some point.  That would, of course, be extra work and probably be difficult to fit into the one week window for each tournament without a draconian organiser.

Well that means going into a Saturday. Something JMK does not like to do.

But in this case, there are six colours to be chosen.

But also, as did happen, some of us correctly worked out the starting colour.

I would suggest that a six day tournament is not an option just yet.

But it is an idea.

Just to point out, when I went for the black, I missed it by a mere hundreds of points.

Yes, I was exhilarated even though I didn't get it. But even just trying it was such a big buzz.

I like Nemesis idea of everyone having to do all colours including the black , is it possible to run day one and day two on the Monday or would that be too confusing.

You can't do all colours because there are six colours and only five days of play. It's up to the player to choose which colours.

Unless JMK agrees, then no.......there is NOT a sixth day of play. Even if she said yes, I don't know if I would comply.

ALL of our tournaments are based on five days of play.

I LIKE that some chose yellow and others chose green on Day 1. It meant something.

I can understand that

It meant that some people chose, and others would not know if they had just burst into flames.

I also love how you obviously saw the "oh shit!" decisions that came later.

Next to the Factacular Cup, this is one of the most merciless of all tournaments.

It was intended that way.

Yup.....we are sticking with six colours and five days.

We're giving the players "freedom of choice" relative to how to screw it up.

We have always stuck to 5 days because in the past there were people who had no access to the internet on the weekend, only at work during the week. That is probably no longer the case so a tourney could go for 6 dyas if wanted so long as it was very clear to people when signing up.

Whether you decide to run 6 days or stick with 5 is up to you.  I can see pros and cons for both ways of doing it.

Sounds good to me, but you'll need extra practice herding cats to keep us on time.

I know science says cats are hard to herd - bur really that's not quite true - just open a can of tuna and yell puss puss puss - and they'll all come running - even the ones from next door!!!!

I just have to put a box in the middle of the floor. In fact, doesn't even have to be a box. A rectangle made from tape on the floor does the same.

Cats.......it's always cats.

Don't get me wrong. A strong purr from a puss will placate anyone's jangled nerves. I can't believe how effective the sensation is.

But let's face it, they are not very smart. Self absorbed maybe, but not smart.

On the contrary, they are very smart. They are smart enough to fool people into thinking they are not smart so they don't have to do anything they don't want. They can be trained however if you know how to go about it. Mine will sit or give a high five on command, he'd be able to more but I can't be bothered teaching him.

Helen, it's called a "spit take".

The best you can do is wipe your bib.

I'm going to try the tape thing.

Meanwhile, I'm excited that my sub human abilities with technology have advanced enough to have a profile picture, however I would have preferred to have been able to post it here. Maybe in another couple of years...

The tape thing doesn't work with all cats but works for a lot.

Took my cat about a minute before he crossed the room and sat in the square. Stayed there for ages too.

Thanks for the link. We don't have cats any more, but next door's comes around quite a bit and I visit my mother's cat frequently, I have high hopes of her. There's a cat that can fight its way out of a paper bag.
