WELCOME TO JAVA JIVE “I RULE” TOURNAMENT SIGNUP

If a psychiatric and scientific inquiry were to be made upon our rulers, mankind would be appalled at the disclosures.

GENERAL RULES AND INFORMATION: (Please read) The Tournament consists of teams consisting of 2 members. The Java Jive will commence on March 13, 2017. Signup will close on Sunday, March 12th at 8PM GMT. Competition will consist of six (6) specific subject Brainoffs of 10 questions beings sent everyday for five days. Only the Tournament Mistress (The Queen of Coffeedom) and her Partner in Crime have knowledge of the subjects to be sent. Be warned, these subjects are not for the faint-hearted. Players must be available to play every day for the whole week. Please do not let your teammate down by signing up and then not playing once competition commences.

Teams will be randomly formed. All one has to do to sign up is post the message “I’m in” and you will be matched with another member to form a team. All team names need to based on A King, Queen, President, Dictator, Caliphate, Shah, Emperor or RulerMale or Female from any period in history. But please try to keep it short as names are combined to form a team name. Please post your  "Ruler" beside your “I’m in’ message. Team matchups will be posted in the forum.

The Tournament Mistress will match team members based on IDs so that those who have been members the longest will be matched with those who have been here the shortest length of time. Teams will be posted on March 12th (or sooner).  You will receive brainoffs from ‘Java Jive’.  A progressive Results Table will be posted in a public forum available to all team members. In the case of a tie (the same odds as seeing flying pigs and monkeys wearing Hello Kitty beanies), The Tournament Mistress or Official Partner in Crime will send three (3) specific subject brainoffs to break the tie. The individual scores for each team member will be added together to form a cumulative team total. The team with the highest cumulative total wins. In case the Factacular site hiccups, we will spring into action and resolve issues as soon as the site is up and running and continue with the competition.

We do respectfully ask that everyone play their challenges as soon as possible after receiving them --- you will be less likely be affected if the site goes down. We will only replay challenges if the site is down for more than 12 hours. We will not replay for anyone letting the challenge time out or for minor site glitches.

AND FINALLY, The Tournament Mistress and her Partners in Crime volunteer their own time, so have some patience with the resolution of any problems that you may encounter and expect that there may be delays in the immediate posting of results. Please send a private message to Java or JMK if you encounter problems or discrepancies. Decisions made by The Tournament Mistress and her Partners in Crime are final and no correspondence will be entered into. Invite other members to come and play! Everyone gets an award and most of all --- everyone has fun!

Comments are always welcome and LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!!!

 In please - John Ballance

John Ballance (1839 – 1893) was an Irish-born New Zealand politician who was the 14th Premier of New Zealand, at the end of the 19th C and the founder of the Liberal Party (the country's first organised political party).

He was a strong supporter of women's rights and a major influence on women in New Zealand getting the vote in 1893.  (Kate Sheppard was a bigger influence but she was never a Premier/Prime Minister so I can't choose her).

Interesting fact: Richard Sedden, Ballance's successsor, the Premier who supported the introduction of the bill that gave woment the right to vote, actually opposed the idea.  When Seddon realised that the passage of the bill was inevitable, he changed his position, claiming to accept the people's will. In actuality, however, he took strong measures to ensure that the
Legislative Council would vote down the Bill, as it had done previously. Seddon's tactics in lobbying the Council were seen by many as underhand, and two Councillors, despite opposing suffrage, voted in favour of the bill in protest and it was passed.

I chose John Ballance because now, more than ever, it is important to recognise leaders who championed civil right.

I choose John Curtin (1885 to 1945), the 14th Prime Minister of Australia.

Upon December 7th, 1941 (Pearl Harbor) and after the Roosevelt declaration on 8 December 1941, Curtin immediately addressed the nation by radio stating that as a result, Australia is also at war with Japan. Ballsy, in that he didn't even consult the US. So he basically said to the world, "You screw with them, you screw with us.". That attitude then went on to become one of the bases of the "A.N.Z.U.S." treaty along with this, his follow-up speech after the declaration of war:

"We look for a solid and impregnable barrier of the Democracies against the three Axis powers, and we refuse to accept the dictum that the Pacific struggle must be treated as a subordinate segment of the general conflict. By that it is not meant that any one of the other theatres of war is of less importance than the Pacific, but that Australia asks for a concerted plan evoking the greatest strength at the Democracies' disposal, determined upon hurling Japan back. The Australian Government, therefore regards the Pacific struggle as primarily one in which the United States and Australia must have the fullest say in the direction of the Democracies' fighting plan. Without any inhibitions of any kind, I make it clear that Australia looks to America, free of any pangs as to our traditional links or kinship with the United Kingdom. We know the problems that the United Kingdom faces. We know the dangers of dispersal of strength, but we know too, that Australia can go and Britain can still hold on. We are, therefore, determined that Australia shall not go, and we shall exert all our energies towards the shaping of a plan, with the United States as its keystone, which will give to our country some confidence of being able to hold out until the tide of battle swings against the enemy."

Paraphrasing, it said "Mother country? We love and respect you. But you have your own problems. So we will make our own alliances if ya don't mind."

Considering Curtin was a dove and a lefty, I think that speech was one of the most forward looking and basically awesome speeches of all time. Of the right attitude and basically the most pro-Australian speech ever written.

Did you know that over a MILLION people all over the world think they are related to "William The Conqueror"?

Yup. More than a million people out there think they are honest-to-goodness "Plantagenet"s.

This is one of the more clever conspiracy theories, based on the fact that William the Conqueror was a huge slut.

In fact, DNA spreading doesn't work that way so no, good try, but no banana.

But awww, I am so relieved you aren't related to a slutty King!

George Washington, it may be myth or an impossibility, but it would be nice to have a US leader who cannot tell a lie.

Napoleon

(Incidentally - William the Conqueror was a Norman king of England rather than a Plantagenet. The Plantagenents were Angevins with the first Plantagenet king being Henry II, about 150 years after the Norman conquest)

Just a short note:  Some of you may know that Michigan was hit with powerful winds on Wednesday which caused a power outage to over 650,000 households and businesses.  They are restoring power, but some residents will lose power and internet/cable in the interim.  We are currently in the group of 'interim' with no internet at home base.  Hopefully we have internet access before I get home from work.  Will keep you updated.
