Just to get you in the mood, a little "rinky-tink" piano ragtime....take it away Winnie!!

Welcome to the Entrants Forum of the Inaugural Factacular Pot Black Tournament!

This tournament is based on the indoor sport of skill and tactics, played with cues and balls on a green baize table, known as "Snooker".

The formal rules of Snooker cannot be followed exactly in a Factacular Pot Black tournament, however, the spirit, tactics and fun of the original remain. Players will find that, as in snooker, they will need to keep a close eye on their opponents' play and adjust their own play accordingly. There will be satisfaction (even triumph) after a ball is potted, excitement will be felt as scores accumulate on the daily score board (The Big Board) and players will be gambling on their own skills and on their assessment of other players' skills.

Players who took part in the previous tournament should pay close attention to the rules and conditions of play that follow. There may be some changes from tournament to tournament, but they will be intended to increase enjoyment in the overall participation of the game. Please do not hesitate to post any questions about how the game is played if you are unsure.

So chalk your cues, don your waistcoats, breakout the neon flashing/spinning bowties (anything to distract your opponent) and enjoy the game!

Now let's get on with how this is gonna work....

DAY TO DAY CONDUCT FOR ALL FIVE DAYS PLAY

At the beginning of each of the 5 days of the Pot Black tournament players will be sent one "all-in" random, 10 question brain-off. All Pot Black Challenges expire within 24 hours.

The initial daily challenge is the Red Ball Challenge and will be issued with the title:

Pot Black Tournament - Day [x] - Red Ball Challenge

Players who succeed in the red ball challenge by scoring points equal to, or above the red ball threshold (this tournament = 800 points) can then proceed to try to pot their next ball or in other words, will be entitled to declare in the Red Ball Challenge forum their choice of the coloured ball they next wish to play (i.e. the score range which the player believes that they can achieve) and the subject category of the brain-off to be played.

All declarations must be made within the 24 hour period of the Red Ball Challenge.

Subject categories are to be chosen from the following list:

  1.  Arts & Literature
  2.  Entertainment
  3.  Geography
  4.  History & Mythology
  5.  Language
  6.  Miscellaneous
  7.  Movies
  8.  Music
  9.  Science and Nature
  10.  Sport & Leisure

NOTE! - Different Colour Per Day Condition Now In Force

Due to popular demand, the condition by which a player must choose a different and non-repeating colour for all five (5) days of qualified play is now in force. This condition will be monitored by FactaCupAdmin and a player will be advised in that day's Red Ball Challenge forum if they must choose another non-repeated colour in order to proceed. Players that fail to nominate an alternate colour (if required) upon expiry of that day's Red Ball Challenge will not be processed for the remainder of that day's play.

(keeping your own records might be helpful too - a "sticky-note" perhaps or a post-it note somewhere around your computer area)

So, to continue, a players declaration will look something like this:

Player X post: "I'll try Blue and Movies please."

REMEMBER - Declarations must be lodged within the 24 hour expiry period of the Red Ball Challenge.

As soon as possible after a declaration is made the player will receive a random 10 question challenge on their chosen subject category. There is a 24 hour period to complete this challenge.

These challenges will be titled in this way;

Pot Black Tournament - Day [x] - Blue - Movies - Player [x]

IMPORTANT - PAY ATTENTION TO THE FOLLOWING PLAYER REQUIREMENT...

Once you have received your chosen challenge, you must score within the designated scoring zone as given in the scoring zones graphic posted below. For example if you are attempting to pot a blue ball you must score 1400 - 1699 points on your quiz. If any fewer than 1400 points are scored you will be deemed to have incurred a PENALTY and points will be deducted equivalent to the negative value of the coloured ball you selected (down to a minimum of zero points). If you get any more than 1699 points, you will be deemed to have incurred a MISS and no points will accrue apart from the one (1) point attributed due to a successful completion of the Red Ball Challenge.

A score within the points range according to the colour chosen will be deemed a HIT and you will be attributed the point score applicable to that colour.

Take careful note of the scoring ranges before choosing your colour.

Aggregate scores will be shown on the "Pot Black Tournament - The Big Board"

Unlike other Factacular tournaments the score is not expressed on the Big Board in terms of the points won on the quizzes, but in terms of snooker points. So for each red ball potted on the daily Red Ball Challenge, 1 point is scored.

For the other colours, which players choose for themselves: yellow 2 points , green 3 points, brown 4 points, blue 5 points, pink 6 points and black 7 points. As each day of results goes by, scores shown on the Big Board will be cumulative.

FactaCupAdmin will declare in all coloured ball challenges whether the player has scored a hit, miss or penalty.

SUMMARY
The above will occur for all five days of tournament play. At the end of five days, the player with the highest aggregate red and coloured ball point score as reflected on the "Pot Black Tournament - The Big Board" will be declared the winner.

The declared Red Ball Threshold and coloured ball scoring "HIT" zones are relative only to the tournament being played. The tournament overseer retains the right to adjust thresholds and scoring zones from tournament to tournament depending on ease or difficulty of play.

As usual, in the case of site interruptions and other problems experienced during tournament play, each situation will be assessed by the tournament overseer, FactaCupAdmin, on a case-by-case basis. Also as usual, all such overseer decisions should be considered final and no further correspondence should be expected.

So, whadaya think?  Feel like you can have a go at the table without ripping up the felt, punching a ball through another player's pint glass, somehow breaking a cue stick or stabbing someone in the crotch with the blunt end?

If so, sign in below as of today and all this coming week and we'll get this thing started next Monday, 13 February 2017.

(what is that awful racket?? Oh...sorry....had the Winnie YouTube track on repeat. Rest your ivories Winnie. That'll be enough for the moment)

I'm in please

I think - my strategy will be to start high and work my way low - I think that I will start with pink - and work my way down to yellow

Then I will have something to look forwards too :)

Now it's just the colour that has to change every day?

So if I want to play the sports subject every day I can?   Yea right - I'm going to do the sports one every day - AS IF!!!

Speaking on behalf of my "clanking clunk of cams"......

Yup, you can choose the same subject category every day if you qualify by successfully completing the Red Ball Challenge.

But the coloured ball? You can only choose it once for every day whilst in play.

If on Day 1 you can choose blue. On Day 2, if you qualify, you can't choose that colour again during the remainder of the tournament. You must choose a different colour. Same for Day 3, 4 & 5. No chosen colour can be re-chosen.

FactaCupAdmin has been geared to monitor the situation.

Don't blame me for this. Check out previous tournament debriefs.

FCA and me are just the poor bunnies that have to look after it.

Java asked me to place an entry on her behalf.

So it is written, so it shall be done.

Oh, how wonderful considering I am not bald. Should I be worried?

No, but really, I understand why. Yul Brynner is a superlative of Hollywood and film history.

He actually did only a few movies comparatively. Some of them with hair on his head. But the couple that "stuck" propelled him into the historic stratosphere of iconography.

Ramses and the King of Siam. Even as a guy, I say "WOW"!
