The 2nd Pot Black Tournament has been decided with nothing less than a perfect maximum score.

I'll post official notifications after I get a few chores done around the house first.

Interim Debrief - Pot Black Tournament #2

It's Day 1 and already it's obvious you guys are getting the point. That's impressive. Well, either that or I, with Ruby Franks' assistance, did a better job of explaining things the second time around.

With effect this tournament, I wanted more players to make it past the Red Ball Challenge and that is happening.

With respect to the coloured ball challenges, now that I see more players making it and the scores showing up above as they are, you can see how the option of restricting players to a choice of one subject category per tournament makes sense. That's obviously a looked at option relative to the next Pot Black tournament.

But with effect this tournament, I'm very keen to see how players respond as the scores and the pressure gets higher. Will mistakes be made? I don't know yet. But I am betting something will happen.

In any case, well done guys! This is turning out better than I expected and I have options up the whazoo!

I am pleading the Hurricane Higgins case for not wearing a tie, but I am wearing a subtle grey pinstripe.

Nemesis may say its not tactics or gamesmanship to go for a black on the first day (I await the result with trepidation) but it works with me, I had some thought about the second day's decision and am now hoping that at some point he's going to make  a foul shot. Besides being awesome at trivia, he's very good at a waiting game, whereas once I get a challenge, I just can't wait to do it and I think scanning all the scores and adjusting ball choices accordingly are part of the tactics.

I'm glad its going well, and think its a great asset that rules can possibly be changed tournament to tournament.

Medical help may need to be sought for options up the whazoo.

Didn't get a Pot Black challenge today ( no daily games either).  Some kind of server problem?

The Pot Black Day 3 Red Ball Challenge has now been issued. Delay was due to an approximately 10 hour down period relative to Factacular.com.

Observation

Ordinarily, this tournament can be fairly complicated to run, but not overly so.

But after a significant Factacular down period? Ouch!

With two red ball challenge games running at the same time, you shoulda seen our poor robot, FCA, buzzing back and forth between days, sending coloured ball challenges, collecting results and posting status's (statusi?).

(yes....I know "status" can be regarded as plural....just having some syntax fun)

In summary, it went from monitoring the status of 16 games at one time up to almost 25 but mercifully short of the maximum of 32.

He's a good robot and looks after things regardless of challenge.

And he's cheap too......just a few cents of machine oil every so often.

OK, Maybe its better to talk about standings or positions. I'm not sure 'status' is plural.  Choose something else if you're not sure.

Ask some blithering blooming blimming children'sTV pirate character if you want some advice on language.

I've met my Nemesis on language and he'll know.

My black ball was less about you sweet Nem, but more about my own ego and would sweet vepa have a  go.....

Well, "status" can be used plurally. I've seen it done.

The question is, what's with the weird spacing?

I mean it Ruby....what's with the weird spacing?

I know we can do it, but what does it mean?

Is that a statement?

Don't know, the spacing happened and I coudn't return to normality.

a) sounds like some kind of metaphor for my life.

b) I know it didn't just 'happen' .I hit something, which I then couldn't unhit. Yup, the queen of technology is showing off her expertise.

c) I was giggling at the advice of a niece.  When I asked her how to psych out on-line opponents, she said 'Be nice and loving, that would freak me out'.

I have established a protocol with my technical team to deal with difficulties such as these.

I yell "What the #@^&*!!"  Then "CAN SOMEONE COME LOOK AT THIS PLEASE!!!!"  Then, my husband or son will wander in, press a key or two and I'm good to go.

I'm musing here. I've managed to pot my last red ball and don't know what ball to go for. I've got a few hours to decide. If I go for pink and pot it I will have one more point than vepa who is also going for pink on this round. If I go for pink and Nemesis manages to pot his fourth day black, he can then win by choosing a lower scoring ball....Do I keep the pressure up, and have even more chance of falling flat on my face, by choosing black? I could choose pink and still fail. jmaxg you're a fiend. Far too much tension in the end game here...

Stop dithering!  Go for black!

(You can do it)

On the other hand, I'd be pushing my luck all the way to the edge to get a fifth black, and might not even get on the podium.  So you could play it safe.

Decisions.

Wow!    Soooooo close!  I do like this game a lot but I think only being able to use a category once will make it more fair.   I did Science all week and while I do admit I probably could have bumped it to pink most of the week I will definitely change my tactics for next time if I have to choose different categories.    Well done all and thanks to the tourney pros who one again have put together an awesome new tournament.

Thanks tallyho. I must admit this one is turning out to be better than expected.

Maybe I should write a pamphlet on how to create tournaments....

Stage 1 - create the idea.

Stage 2 - post the entry forum and procrastinate.

Stage 3 - on the tournament's day 1, panic like hell and slap something together in Excel.

Seems to work.

Anyhoo, many props to Nemesis, Ruby Franks and vepa1943 for their 1st, 2nd and 3rd finishings. Which, as it happens, is exactly the same placings as the inaugural tournament.

But, of course, congratulations must go to Nemesis for his perfect showing and maximum possible score. Now, what to do about that.....hmmmm.

Well, with effect the next tournament, the "choosing a different subject category per day for all five days" condition, as advised by EVERYBODY, will take effect. So we shall see if that makes a difference and, at the very least, causes wobbles relative to certain players.

If dominance is still apparent after that, I have yet more options to deploy. What they are, you'll have to wait and see IF it comes to that.....maybe cycling the subject categories will have an interesting effect.

But a HUGE well done to Nemesis, Ruby Franks and vepa1943 for their respective placings.

And a HUGE thank you to all players......I know it's cliche, but you are all winners in my book.

Thanks to jmaxg, Nemesis and vepa for a lot of fun and making my heart beat faster, and of course especially to Nemesis for holding his nerve, and making me laugh.

I thought the rules might get changed, and the next game will be more tension-filled and I'll be even more stressed by decision-taking. I'm looking forward to it and hope that my nerves can take it.

( huge) THANK YOU!

It's certainly a nerve wracking format.  One wrong answer can make such a large difference to your score and final position.  Congratulations to Ruby, vepa and tallyho for keeping the pressure on to the very end.

Congrats to all factasnookers, who made this tourney such a tense experience. Your procrastination jmaxg was a stroke of genius. I played 5 different categories and on two occasions it was pure thrill/luck on the last question to get over the pink hump. It won't get easier. Well done everybody.

I figured it out finally!!!  Wrote a little note and left it next to me so I could keep track of what score i was aiming at.  Giving out hearty DOHS when I fell short or went over

Snooker and short term memory loss does not work together - but I am coming up with techniques to aid me - I love the new game!

May take another couple of goes to get my stride :)

Thanks Jmax, you've obviously put a lot of thought & effort into putting this together.
Looking forward to next time.    : )
