In the 1820s prospectors came to the state looking for minerals and the miners lived like badgers in tunnels in the hillsides- the state animal is also the badger.
The term 'hoosier' has been in use since at least 1826 but the etemology of the word is unknown.
The name was derived from the "sooner clause" of the Indian Appropriation Act, which disallowed the occupation of the Unassigned Lands prior to their being open for settlement.
