Tunis is one of the oldest cities in the Mediterranean area. The ruins of the ancient city of Carthage are nearby. The Arab League had its headquarters in Tunis from 1979 to 1990.

Established in 1705 - dissolution in 1957. Bey Muhammad VIII al-Amin assumed the title of King and reigned as such until the prime minister Habib Bourguiba deposed the dynasty and declared Tunisia a republic on July 25, 1957.
