Unofficial nickname. Nicknamed for the official state tree, the Sabal Palmetto Founded in 2003, encompasses 33 mi². The Savannah forms much of the border between South Carolina and Georgia, and flows through the cities of Augusta and Savannah.  The palmetto tree represents Col. William Moultrie's heroic defence of the palmetto log fort on Sullivan's Island against British attack in 1776.
