Welsh born American actor whose film career spanned from 1929-1985. he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Billy Wilder's "Lost Weekend" in 1945. he was Oliver Barrett III in "Love Story" in 1970. he teamed with Grace Kelly in Alfred Hitchcock's "Dial M for Murder". he played Professor Vernon Simpson who used wood repellent to break into Major League Baseball in 1949 in "It Happens Every Spring" with Jean Peters and Paul Douglas.
