Conceived as an American folk opera, it is considered racist by some
Libretto by DuBose Heyward, and lyrics by Ira Gershwin and Dorothy Heyward. Based on Heyward's novel Porgy.
(1935) The original cast contained classically trained black singers rather than white singers in blackface (as was widely accepted at the time), and so marked an important step forward for black actors in American theater.
