In 1821, AgustÃn de Iturbide, a Mexican general who switched sides to fight for independence, proclaimed himself emperor –-officially only as a temporary measure. His government lasted only 18 months; a revolt in 1823, led by Antonio López de Santa Anna, established the United Mexican States.
