The Bactrian Camel's two humps contains fat . The camel can go without food and water for 3 to 4 days. It is well adapted to desert life. They are an endangered species and live in the Gobi desert and the grassland steppes of Asia.

Approx. 950 (2003). Heavy persecution by hunters and competition with domestic animals for water and pasture were the principal causes of decline up to the 1960's. Hunting has continued to have a major impact up to the present. Additional threats include settling of oases by pastoralists, prospecting for and extraction of oil and gold, and hybridization with domestic camel stock.

The US Army once experimented with camels in the Arizona desert, and eventually gave up. The remaining camels were set free, and are now protected.
Not only are their humps fat (not stored water), but camels can drink up to twenty gallons of water at a time, and have exceedingly long eyelashes as adpatations to desert sandstorms
