Hempel won the Ambassador Book Award in 2007 for her Collected Stories, which was also named as one of the The New York Times' Ten Best Books of the year. In 2008 she won the Rea Award for the Short Story. In 2009 she won the PEN/Malamud Award for Short Fiction with Alistair McLeod.
