Tiriti o Waitangi. New Zealand became a British colony. “In consideration thereof Her Majesty the Queen of England extends to the Natives of New Zealand Her royal protection and imparts to them all the Rights and Privileges of British Subjects”.
Established a British governor in New Zealand, recognised Māori ownership of their lands and other properties, and gave Māori the rights of British subjects. Differences exist between the English and Maori (Tiriti o Waitangi) versions of the treaty.
